    Governor Shri Bandaru Dattatraya has expressed heartfelt shock over the demise of Dr CR Rao, one of the world’s most eminent statisticians

    handigarh, August 25, 2023: Haryana Governor Shri Bandaru Dattatraya has expressed heartfelt shock over the demise of Dr CR Rao, one of the world’s most eminent statisticians, and has conveyed his deepest condolences to the bereaved family members. Dr Rao, who was 102, breathed his last in the United States on Wednesday.

    “I am deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Dr CR Rao, an eminent statistician, whose contributions to the field of statistics have left an indelible mark. His groundbreaking work and dedication have inspired countless individuals in the scientific community and beyond. May his legacy continue to shine brightly through the impact he has made on the world of statistics,” said Shri Dattatraya.

    He said that Dr Rao, who taught and researched at the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Kolkata, pioneered several fundamental statistical concepts and prominent among them being Cramer–Rao inequality and Rao–Blackwellization, which are part of undergraduate textbooks on statistics and econometrics.

    Born on September 10, 1920, in Hadagali, Bellary district in a Telugu family, Dr Rao was also a member of several government committees for the development of national statistical systems, statistical education and research in India.

    Former US President George Bush conferred on him the National Medal of Science. He was also honoured with Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan in 1969 and 2001 respectively.
