    Promote handloom to ensure that every hand gets work in the country: Governor

    Governor was speaking in the program organized in Gurugram on National Handloom Day

    Chandigarh, August 7, 2022: Haryana Governor Shri Bandaru Dattatraya on Sunday said that every hand should get work for the progress of India and this goal can be achieved only by promoting handloom products. He said that there has been an old tradition of handloon in rural areas, which has always been a source of strength for our economy. Today again there is a need to promote handloom products to strengthen the rural economy.

    Governor Shri Dattatraya was speaking as the Chief Guest at a program organized in Gurugram on the occasion of National Handloom Day on Sunday. He also visited the exhibition site of handmade products put up by craftswomen and weavers at the Public Works Rest House in Gurugram. The Governor visited the exhibition and interacted with the exhibitors and inquired about the source of raw materials and time taken to make the final products. He also asked them about the manpower involved and the sources of finance, and arrangements to sell their products. Most of the women who set up their stalls in the exhibition were associated with SHGs formed under the Haryana State Rural Livelihood Mission.

    The Governor also asked them if they were facing any difficulties in carrying out
    their work related to handloom. He said that apart from giving training to women to start their own units, bank loans, etc., are also being provided to them.
    If anyone has any problem, she or he should meet the Deputy Commissioner, said the Governor.

    Governor Shri Dattatraya called upon the women associated with handloom industry to focus on quality so that their products are exported as well. At the same time, he advised them to use banks for their business transactions.

    He said that the Central and State Governments are promoting handloom industries. Panipat has become a major center of handloom industry in Haryana. About 50 women self-help groups participated in the exhibition, to whom the Governor also announced an amount of Rs. 2.5 lakh as financial support.

    While encouraging the women, he said that the family whose women work, that family definitely progresses. He said that women have potential. So women of Self Help Groups should also improve the social environment in their villages and surrounding areas. Women should come forward to remove social evils and problems. He said that Smt Pooja Sharma, a resident of Chandu village, makes such food products that the President honoured her on the International Women’s Day. She is a living example of women’s empowerment, he said.

    Shri Dattatraya informed that National Handloom Day is celebrated every year on 7th August. When the BJP government came to power in the year 2014, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi had announced to celebrate the National Handloom Day on 7 August 2015. Its objective is to promote small and medium weavers. He said that handloom is a heritage of India and must be preserved. He also called upon the people to wear cotton and khadi clothes, buy hand made items which would encourage the handloom industry.

    On this occasion, Deputy Commissioner of Gurugram Shri Nishant Kumar Yadav, DCP East Shri Virendra Vij, Chief Protocol Officer Shri Vatsal Vashisht, Chief Executive Officer of Zilla Parishad Anu Shyokand and other dignitaries were also present.
